Olive oil, conference in Palermo

“Extra virgin olive oil: health and wealth”. This is the title of the conference organized by IRVO and which will be held on Thursday 19 November in the yellow room of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. The strengthening of an olive oil supply chain in Sicily is the central theme of the meeting.

“A supply chain – underlines the general director of the Regional Institute of Wine and Oil, Lucio Monte – which must take the path of quality. A quality that must develop in different sectors, from that which concerns the process, to the company up to marketing. A virtuous path like the one that has been achieved in the wine sector."

With this objective, various sector experts will take turns at the table, from the researcher to the producer, from the politician to the doctor (poster). The desired recognition by the European community for the Oevo Igp Sicilia brand can guarantee the qualification process of the entire supply chain. The conference aims to indicate to operators the considerable potential of the sector, offering a summary of concrete and qualified actions.

The meeting will be moderated by Luigi Caricato, writer and journalist as well as oleologist, and will take place throughout the day. The works will be opened by the vice-president of the ARS, Giuseppe Lupo, Michela Giuffrida, member of the Agriculture Commission of the European Parliament, the new regional councilor for Agriculture, Antonello Cracolici, Rosaria Barresi, general manager of the Regional Agriculture Department, the extraordinary commissioner of the IRVO, Benedetto G. Belnome, the extraordinary commissioner of the Agricultural Development Agency, Francesco Calanna, the director of the institution, Lucio Monte, Giacomo Gagliano, director of ICQRF Sicily, Alessandro Chiarelli, regional president of Coldiretti, Pino Gullo of the Green Economy Department of Legacoop Sicily, Manfredi Barbera , CEO of Premiati Oleifici Barbera, Alfonso Failla of Assivob and Maurizio Lunetta, president of the Oevo Igp Sicilia promoting committee.

The thematic interventions (organised by the Universities of Palermo and Messina, the CNR, Corissia, Arnas Civico, Aipo, Foss and Pegaso) will focus on the recovery of polyphenols from vegetation water, management of olive growing systems, and the characteristics of olive oils. Sicilian olives, health aspects, use in the pharmaceutical industry, organizational models of producers.

Dario Cartabellotta, general manager of the Regional Department of Mediterranean Fisheries, fresh from Expo 2015, will also speak with a speech entitled "The olive tree and the BioMediterranean Cluster of Milan Expo2015: what legacy for the future".
