Sicily protagonist at the Vinacria Ortigia Wine Fest 2024: IRVO celebrates food and wine excellence in an international event

The Vinacria Ortigia Wine Fest confirms itself as one of the most prestigious showcases for Mediterranean food and wine, transforming the historic heart of Syracuse into a meeting point between tradition and innovation. The event, which attracts producers, experts and enthusiasts from all over the world, offers a unique platform to discover the excellence of Sicilian wine and olive oil.

This year the IRVO (Regional Institute of Wine and Oil) is not only participating as a protagonist, but is also using this occasion to announce in advance the recognition of Sicily as “European Region of Food and Wine 2025”. A title that celebrates the culinary and cultural identity of the island, rewarding its ability to combine history, quality and innovation.

Giusi Mistretta, IRVO commissioner, underlined: “Participating in the Vinacria Ortigia Wine Fest 2024 means not only promoting Sicilian excellence, but also anticipating the great journey that will bring Sicily to the center of European food and wine in 2025”.
The masterclasses in the program
IRVO will guide the public through three dedicated events, which combine culture, flavours and excellent techniques:

December 14, 6:30 pm – Archimede Hall
“Perpetuo and Marsala: Two souls, one territory”
With Gianni Giardina (IRVO winemaker) and Mauro Lo Iacono (head sommelier Villa Igiea in Palermo).
A journey to discover the symbolic wines of western Sicily, linked by stories of tradition and unique territories.
December 15, 5:00 pm – Archimede Hall
“Single variety oils from Sicily”
By Michele Riccobono, director of the IRVO oil control and certification body.
A focus on the exceptional variety of Sicilian oils, which combine authenticity and sustainability.
December 16, 3:00 pm – Sala Minerva
“IGP Oils of Sicily”
By Michele Riccobono, an in-depth look at certified products, a symbol of quality and a link with the territory.

The Vinacria Ortigia Wine Fest represents a key moment to promote Sicilian food and wine identity. Thanks to the participation of IRVO, the 2024 edition celebrates Sicily as a model of excellence, awaiting a 2025 that will consecrate it as the European capital of food and wine. Public consultation for the update of the Three-Year Plan for the Prevention of Corruption and Transparency (PTPCT) 2026/2028.
