L'Regional Institute of Wine and Oil accompanies Volcanic Roots – which will take place on 29 and 30 August in Randazzo, Sicily – with the wealth of knowledge and data on the Etna wine sector, offering an updated picture of theevolution of the Etna DOC and its products. A technical-scientific contribution that strengthens the link between certified quality, local territory, and the valorization of volcanic excellence.
THE data from the IRVO Observatory officially reveal the growth of the Etna DOC which, in the space of just over a decade, has multiplied the number of winemakers, surface areas, and quantities of wine bottled and tasted in Italy and around the world.
From 2012 to 2025 the valorization of the productions of the highest active volcano in Europe has seen an extraordinary development of certifications +711% (from 79 to 641) and of quantities of wine certificates that have passed to +390% (from 9,426 to 46,152 hectoliters in 2025).
The number of registered winegrowers has more than doubled from 202 in 2012 to 509 in 2025. This trend continues, considering that as of August 2026, there have already been 576 certificates (+15.91 TP3T) and over 43,000 hectoliters of wine (+22.01 TP3T) compared to the same date the previous year. A total of 94,700 quintals of grapes were harvested on 1,449 hectares in 2025.
Of the 157 companies subject to the IRVO Control Body, 144 complete the entire supply chain internally, from winemaking to bottling.
The production sees the pouring into the glasses of 42.2% of Etna Rosso, 40.3% of Etna Bianco, 8.9% of Etna Rosato, 4.4% of Etna Spumante Bianco, 2.8% of Etna Bianco Superiore, 0.9% of Etna Spumante Rosato and 0.6 of Etna Rosso Riserva.
Volcanic bubbles are on the rise: over 2,000 hectoliters of sparkling wines will already be produced in 2025, almost double the figure for 2022.
The Etna DOC is expanding, consolidating its supply chain, and simultaneously modifying its production mix, with a strong advance in white and sparkling wines.
The certified production data are successful and the Report on Italian Food and Wine Tourism 2025 – which focuses on six foreign markets (Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Austria, Switzerland, and France) – reveals a growing interest in domestic production, particularly Sicilian produce: respondents' propensity for a future food and wine experience in Italy reaches values above 80% in some cases. Among the most desired wine tourism destinations are Chianti, ranked as high as 41% by Americans, and Mount Etna, ranked as high as 40% by the French.
Encouraging numbers accompany the event Volcanic Roots which – between lava, vineyards and glasses – transforms Randazzo, on 29 and 30 August 2026, into a meeting point dedicated to the wines of Etna with 28 wineries, 12 tour operators from different parts of Europe, the USA and Russia and 5 international buyersThousands of enthusiasts will be welcomed, curious to discover the new vintages and iconic wines.
